With the recent cold snap and the ever changing colors of the leaves upon campus trees, we can’t help but to realize that soon it will be winter once again in Minnesota. To remind us what that will look like, here are a series of images of campus trees taken by C.J. Hibbard in 1902 to document the “winter condition” of plant life for the Department of Botany:
– Ulmus Americana [American elm], 1902
– Juglans cinerea [Butternut], tree in winter condition, 8th Ave SE and University Ave., 1902
– Quercus macrocarpa (Quercus iberica) [Bur oak], winter condition, 9th Ave and 4th St. SE, 1902
– Quercus macrocarpa (Quercus iberica) [Bur oak], winter condition, 1902
