On a sunny June afternoon in 1902, Thomas Sadler Roberts captured this Black-backed Woodpecker peeking out of it’s nesting place in the hole of this tree near Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota. This Woodpecker, also known as the Three-toed, or Arctic Woodpecker, deemed the environment satisfactory, and came out to play – er, peck. His roommate appears to have the same curiosity…
